India’s online gaming sector entered a new regulatory era on May 1, 2026, with the coming into force of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 and the accompanying Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026. The framework establishes a centralised regulatory regime through the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI), introduces enhanced user protection measures, and creates a structured mechanism for classification and oversight of online games.
The new regime places significant compliance obligations on gaming platforms, including age-verification requirements, grievance redressal mechanisms, user safeguards and regulatory oversight of platform operations. The framework also seeks to distinguish permissible gaming formats from prohibited online money gaming activities, providing greater regulatory certainty while strengthening consumer protection and enforcement measures.
